‘Ladies in Lavender’ (2014)
‘Ladies in Lavender’ is delicately paced and heart-warming drama about unfulfilled dreams, innocence and unrequited love. Janet (Maggie Smith) and Ursula (Judi Dench) are ageing sisters who live together above a Cornwall beach in 1936. One day they discover a castaway (Daniel Bruhl) washed ashore on the beach. They nurse him back to health with the help of the local doctor (David Warner) and discover that the young man, a Pole, is a phenomenally gifted violinist. The castaway has an unsettling effect on the sisters, especially on Ursula, who finds her feelings for the man go deeper than being maternal and has her life changed forever. The film is written and directed by Charles Dance, and he has crafted a tender and bittersweet story of innocence and regret, helped of course by his two legendary and incomparable lead actresses.
